![]() The Spy Next Door is yet another of those ghastly pictures where an action star learns about family values by fathering a bunch of hostile and ill-mannered children while being hunted down by homicidal bad guys. Jaw-droppingly unfunny and morally despicable, it doesn't work on any level. It's a horrifyingly misjudged mix of comedy and drama, caper flick and romance, middle- of-the-road Hollywood product and raunchy sex comedy. This is the kind of desperately sad, would-be offbeat movie that A-list stars make only when their career is on the skids. But you don't need to be homophobic to hate Carrey's character.Īmazingly, writer-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa seem to think he's a lovable rogue, instead of a career-criminal with the charisma of a cockroach. Some people will flinch at the gay sex scenes, which are surprisingly explicit for a mainstream comedy. He plays a sociopathic con-man who walks out on his wife and small daughter to enjoy a flamboyantly gay lifestyle he can't afford with first an Aids victim (Rodrigo Santoro) and then a creepy convict - that's Ewan McGregor, with another of his hammy yet ineffectual performances and risible attempts at an American accent.
